New Stuff for 2001
May 2001
A bumper crop as companies release latest updates
to new products
After the Christmas rush, a number of companies
have updated their product ranges for early 2001, providing ever
more sophisticated applications for web producers.
While Macromedia still leads the field in many
areas (having provided a complete overhaul for Dreamweaver, Flash,
Fireworks and InterDev by December), it is closely followed by its
rival Adobe. Not only did Adobe produce a new version of GoLive
that introduced new features for database creation, it has returned
to its more traditional product line over the past few months with
a stronger eye on the web, for example with Premiere 6 which now
has much greater support for streaming media. In addition, the release
of Acrobat 5 adds new features to one of the most popular formats
for distribution of information online.
For those on a budget, a new version of Namo's
Web Editor 4 provides many elements (ASP or PHP database support,
for example) and a polished interface that rivals many alternative
semi-professional packages for a mere £90. Another inexpensive
e-commerce solution comes from Softwair Publishing in the form of
ShopFactory, helping you set up an online shop for £200 with
the professional/£119 with the limited versions.

Those attempting to make the web simpler
to use as well as design, a couple of utilities from GoTo
may be worth considering: WebEarly 3.0 caches pages as you
link to a site, speeding up access when you decide to follow
such links, while MemoWeb saves pages for offline viewing
with greater flexibility than the defaults in Internet Explorer.
Finally, one neat utility which will not
be applicable to most users is still worth considering in
certain restricted instances: WebCompiler takes a complete
web site and creates a single executable that can be run anywhere
to demonstrate what is on the site.
