St Michael's Mount

St Michael's Mount

Set in the curving bay from the Lizard to Lamorna Cove near Penzance, the 'guarded mount' of St Michael is one of the most romantic sites in England.

The mount, rising some 200 feet to the priory and castle which crown it, can be reached by a half mile causeway when the tide is out, or by boat at other times. The castle as it stands now was largely rebuilt by the St Aubyns, but the priory was founded here in the 11th century and entered history when it was seized by Henry de Pomery when Richard Lionheart was a prisoner of Austria.

The legend of its name is that St Michael appeared to a hermit on the Mount, as alluded to in Milton's poem, Lycidas.

Marazion

Noted today simply as the small town beside St Michael's Mount, Marazion was a town when nearby Penzance was just a village, serving as the meeting point for pilgrims who came to visit the Priory, crossing the causeway at low tide.

The church was built in the last century, and there are various treasures stored here from when the spot was more than a tourist attraction, including a chalice granted by Queen Elizabeth I.
